Walk St. Paul along Summit Avenue

St. Paul is the older, quieter twin of Minneapolis, with a Victorian avenue of mansions, a cathedral on a hill and the Mississippi below its bluffs. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and Summit Avenue is one long, straight line to start with.

Downtown

Rice Park is the small square at the heart of downtown, surrounded by the Landmark Center, an old federal courthouse with turrets, the Ordway theatre and the central library. The Minnesota State Capitol, with a marble dome, stands on a rise north of downtown.

Lowertown, east of downtown, is an old warehouse district with a farmers market and CHS Field, the ballpark. The skyway system links many downtown buildings above street level.

Summit Avenue

Summit Avenue runs for several miles west from the Cathedral of St. Paul, past one of the longest stretches of Victorian mansions in the country. F. Scott Fitzgerald lived on Summit Terrace, and the James J. Hill House is near the cathedral.

Summit ends at the Mississippi River, where the bluffs have paths along the top. Cathedral Hill and Grand Avenue, a street of shops just south of Summit, are good to add.

Winter

Winters are long and very cold. The skyways help downtown. The Winter Carnival, in late January, fills the city.

Summit Avenue is a straight line of several miles. Walking it one way and coming back along Grand fills a long strip.

Bring the walks you already did

An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in St. Paul clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.

From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
