Sanmachi Suji
Sanmachi Suji is the old merchant quarter, three parallel streets of dark wooden houses from the Edo period, with sake breweries marked by balls of cedar hanging at the door. It is just across the Miyagawa river from the station area.
The Takayama Jinya, a former government office, sits just south, with rooms and a rice storehouse open to visitors.
Markets and temples
Two morning markets run every day, one along the Miyagawa river and one in front of the Jinya, selling vegetables, pickles and crafts.
The Higashiyama walking course, on the eastern edge of town, links a line of temples and shrines through the woods up to Shiroyama Park, the site of the old castle.
Coverage
Takayama is small and flat in the centre, and a day covers the old town, the markets and the temples. Winters are cold and snowy.
The Takayama Festival, in spring and autumn, brings out tall decorated floats. Hida no Sato, an open air museum of old farmhouses, is on the hill west of town.
