Walk Tallinn's Old Town and beyond
Tallinn has one of the best preserved medieval old towns in Europe, with walls, towers and a hill above. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the Old Town is small enough to clear completely.
Old Town
Tallinn's Old Town is a World Heritage site, a medieval Hanseatic town with its walls and many towers still standing. Town Hall Square is at its heart, with the Gothic town hall. Narrow streets and passages, such as St Catherine's Passage, lead off it in every direction.
Above it rises Toompea, the upper town, reached by two steep lanes. Its viewing platforms look out over the red roofs, the church spires and the sea.
Out of the walls
North west of the Old Town, Kalamaja is a neighbourhood of colourful wooden houses, with the Telliskivi creative city in old factory buildings and the Balti Jaam market. East, Kadriorg has a baroque palace in a large park.
A seaside promenade runs from the port east toward Pirita, a long flat walk with the Baltic beside you.
Coverage
The Old Town is small and dense, so a couple of days can clear almost all of it, which is very satisfying. Kalamaja and Kadriorg add two more patches.
Winters are dark and cold; summers have long light evenings.
