Walk Riga from the Old Town to Alberta iela

Old Town
Riga's Old Town lies on the Daugava, with the House of the Blackheads on the town hall square, St Peter's Church with its tall spire and a lift to the top, and a tangle of cobbled streets in between.
A green belt of parks along an old moat, the city canal, separates the Old Town from the newer city. The Freedom Monument stands on the boulevard across it.
Art Nouveau and the market
Beyond the canal, the streets around Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela are lined with Art Nouveau facades, with faces, figures and patterns covering the buildings. Around a third of the buildings in central Riga are in this style.
South of the Old Town, the Central Market occupies huge hangars that once housed zeppelins. A good loop: the Old Town, the canal park, the Freedom Monument, the Art Nouveau district, and down to the market.

Riga is flat and compact, so walking is easy. The Old Town fills quickly, and the Art Nouveau district adds a regular grid beside it.
