Walk Vilnius through the Old Town
Vilnius has one of the largest surviving old towns in central and eastern Europe, a web of baroque churches and courtyards. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the courtyards hide many extra corners.
The Old Town
The Old Town is large and irregular, with church spires on almost every street. The Gate of Dawn, the last surviving city gate, holds a revered icon. Pilies street leads north to Cathedral Square, with its white cathedral and separate bell tower.
St Anne's Church, a brick Gothic building with a lace like facade, is a short walk east. Many buildings have courtyards linked by passages that are worth exploring.
Tower and republic
Gediminas Tower stands on a hill above Cathedral Square with a view of the red roofs. Across the small Vilnia river, Uzupis declared itself an independent republic as an artistic joke, and its constitution is displayed on a wall in many languages.
The Hill of Three Crosses, east of the centre, gives another view. A loop: the Gate of Dawn, the Old Town, Cathedral Square, Gediminas Tower, Uzupis and back.
Coverage
The Old Town is hilly in places and large enough to take several days to clear properly. Its curving lanes produce a dense, organic pattern on the map.
Winters are cold and snowy, summers mild.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Vilnius clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
