Walk Tbilisi through the old town

The old town
The old town lies along the Mtkvari river below the Narikala fortress. Abanotubani, the bath district, has domed brick sulphur baths, and a path leads up a narrow gorge to a waterfall in the middle of the city.
Sololaki and the streets around it have houses with carved wooden balconies and painted entrance halls. The lanes are steep and twisting, with stairways between them.
Fortress, bridge and avenue
Walk up to Narikala, or take the cable car from Rike Park across the river. The Mother of Georgia statue stands on the ridge. The Bridge of Peace, a glass and steel footbridge, crosses the river below.
Rustaveli Avenue, the main boulevard, runs north west with theatres and museums. Fabrika, a former factory turned hostel and courtyard of bars, is across the river. Mtatsminda, with a funicular, rises above it all.

Tbilisi is steep and its old town tangled, so it fills slowly and richly. Summers are hot, winters mild.
Pavements can be uneven, and traffic is heavy on the main roads.
