Walk Thessaloniki along the sea
Thessaloniki stretches along a bay with a long waterfront promenade, Roman monuments and Byzantine churches in its streets. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the seafront makes an easy first line.
The waterfront
Thessaloniki's waterfront promenade runs for kilometres along the bay, past the White Tower, the city's symbol, to the Umbrellas, a tall sculpture by the sea. The newer section, Nea Paralia, has gardens and wide paths.
Aristotelous Square opens from the waterfront into the centre, framed by grand buildings. Ladadika, near the port, is a lively district of bars in old warehouses.
Monuments and the upper town
The city is full of Roman and Byzantine buildings. The Rotunda and the Arch of Galerius stand on Egnatia Street, and Byzantine churches such as Agios Dimitrios are scattered through the centre. The Modiano market sells food in a covered hall.
Ano Poli, the upper town, climbs the hill to the north, with old houses, steep lanes and the city walls, with a view over the bay. A good day: the waterfront, the White Tower, the Rotunda, Agios Dimitrios and up to the walls.
