FOG
Domes, ruins and a mountain

Walk Sofia below Vitosha

Sofia sits below a mountain, with Roman ruins under its streets and golden domes above them. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the centre is compact enough to cover in a couple of days.

Layers of history

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, with its gold domes, is the city's landmark. A short walk away, the Rotunda of St George, a fourth century brick church, stands in a courtyard among government buildings. The ruins of ancient Serdika are exposed beside and below the central streets and metro station.

The Banya Bashi Mosque and the synagogue are near each other in the centre, and public taps nearby run with warm mineral water from the springs under the city.

Boulevard and park

Vitosha Boulevard, a pedestrian street, runs south toward the mountain, lined with cafes. At its end, the National Palace of Culture sits in a park. East of the centre, Borisova Gradina is a large park with long tree lined paths.

A good loop: the cathedral, the Rotunda, the Serdika ruins, the mosque, down Vitosha Boulevard, and back through the parks. Vitosha mountain is a bus ride away for real hiking.

Coverage

The centre is compact and mostly flat, and it fills quickly. The yellow cobbles of the central boulevards are a nice detail underfoot.

Summers are warm and winters cold and snowy, with Vitosha white behind the city.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Sofia walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
