Walk Bucharest along Calea Victoriei
Bucharest mixes a small old town, belle epoque streets and some of the largest buildings in Europe. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the long avenues and big parks make for broad, bold strokes.
Old Town and the grand street
The Old Town, around Lipscani street, is a small grid of lanes with bars, churches and the old princely court. The Carturesti Carusel, a bookshop in a restored building with white balconies, is a short walk away.
Calea Victoriei runs north from the Old Town through the city, lined with palaces, the Romanian Athenaeum and old hotels. It is the classic walk across Bucharest.
Monuments and parks
South west of the centre, the Palace of the Parliament is one of the largest buildings in the world, at the end of a long boulevard. Walking around it gives a sense of its scale.
The city has large parks: Cismigiu Gardens in the centre, and Herastrau, now King Michael I Park, around a lake in the north, past the Arc de Triomf. A long day: the Palace of the Parliament, the Old Town, Calea Victoriei, and north to the lake.
Coverage
Bucharest is flat and spread out, with long distances between sights, so the map grows in long lines. Summers are hot, winters cold.
Watch out for traffic on the big boulevards, and use underpasses where provided.
How FOG keeps score here
FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 120 metres around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.
