Walk Belgrade from Kalemegdan
Belgrade stands on a ridge above the meeting of the Sava and the Danube, with a fortress at the point. FOG starts the map hidden and clears only what you walk, and the river paths below the city make long bright lines.
Fortress and centre
Kalemegdan, the fortress park, sits at the tip of the ridge with views over the confluence of the Sava and the Danube. Its walls, gates and lawns make a large green area to walk through.
From the fortress, Knez Mihailova, a pedestrian street, runs to Republic Square. Nearby, Skadarlija is a short cobbled bohemian street of old taverns. Further south, the huge Temple of St Sava stands on the Vracar plateau.
Along the rivers
Below the fortress, promenades follow both rivers. The Sava waterfront has been redeveloped, and paths continue across bridges to New Belgrade and along the Danube to Zemun, a former separate town with its own old centre and a tower on the hill.
Ada Ciganlija, a river island turned lake, has a path around it of several kilometres. A big day: Kalemegdan, Knez Mihailova, Skadarlija, down to the Danube, along the river to Zemun.
Coverage
The centre is hilly but compact. The river paths are flat and long, so the map grows a dense core with long arms along the water.
Summers are hot, winters cold, and the city is lively late into the night.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Belgrade clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
