Walk Sarajevo from the old bazaar
Sarajevo lies in a narrow valley, with an Ottoman bazaar giving way to Austro-Hungarian avenues in the space of a few steps. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the steep hillsides add endless small lanes to find.
Bazaar and avenue
Bascarsija, the old bazaar, is a quarter of small workshops, coppersmiths and coffee houses, centred on the Sebilj, a wooden fountain. The Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque stands nearby.
Walk west along Ferhadija and the style changes abruptly from Ottoman to Austro-Hungarian. A line on the pavement marks the point where the two meet. Along the river Miljacka, the Latin Bridge is where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914.
Up the hills
The valley sides climb steeply, covered in houses and narrow lanes. The Yellow Fortress, on the east side, is a popular viewpoint at sunset. A cable car climbs Mount Trebevic, south of the city, where the old Olympic bobsleigh track winds through the forest.
Throughout the city, Sarajevo roses, shell marks filled with red resin, mark places where people died in the siege of the 1990s.
Coverage
The centre is long and narrow, following the valley, so it fills as a strip. The hillside lanes are steep, but they give the map a lot of fine detail.
Winters are cold and snowy, and summers warm.
The character who walks with you
FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.
Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Sarajevo is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
