Walk Valencia down the Turia
Valencia turned its old riverbed into a long green park that curves around the old town to the sea. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and that park makes one of the finest lines any city can offer.
The old town
Valencia's Ciutat Vella is a dense web of streets around the cathedral, whose bell tower, the Miguelete, you can climb. Nearby are the Lonja de la Seda, a Gothic silk exchange, and the Central Market, a huge modernist hall of iron and glass.
Barrio del Carmen, in the north west of the old town, is full of street art and small bars. Two old city gates, the Torres de Serranos and the Torres de Quart, still stand.
The Turia
After a flood in 1957, the river Turia was diverted and its old bed became the Jardin del Turia, a park around nine kilometres long that curves around the old town. Walk it end to end and you finish at the City of Arts and Sciences, a cluster of white futuristic buildings.
From there, continue to the port and the long beach promenade at Malvarrosa. Ruzafa, south of the centre, is a lively grid of cafes.
Coverage
Valencia is completely flat, which makes long walks easy. The old town fills as a dense oval, wrapped by the long green curve of the Turia.
Summers are hot and humid; spring and autumn are ideal. Las Fallas in March fills the streets with giant figures and fireworks.
The character who walks with you
