FOG
A capital you can finish

Walk every street in Valletta

Valletta is one of the smallest capitals in Europe, a fortified grid on a peninsula between two harbours. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and here you can clear the whole city in a day or two.

A grid on a peninsula

Valletta was built by the Knights of St John in the sixteenth century as a planned city on a narrow peninsula. Its streets form a strict grid running down the slopes, many of them in steps, between tall limestone houses with enclosed wooden balconies.

Republic Street runs down the spine from the City Gate to Fort St Elmo at the tip. St John's Co-Cathedral, plain outside and gilded inside, holds two paintings by Caravaggio.

Bastions and harbours

Massive bastions surround the city. The Upper Barrakka Gardens look over the Grand Harbour to the Three Cities, and a saluting battery fires a cannon at noon. The Lower Barrakka Gardens are quieter.

Walk the perimeter along the bastions, then work every street of the grid. A small ferry crosses the Grand Harbour to the Three Cities, and another crosses to Sliema for more seafront walking.

Coverage

Valletta is about a kilometre long and a few hundred metres wide, so you can genuinely light up every street. On the map it becomes a bright, perfect grid surrounded by dark water.

Summers are hot and the steps are steep. Spring and autumn are best.

The character who walks with you

FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.

Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Valletta is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
