Walk Victoria around the Inner Harbour
Victoria is compact, mild and built around a harbour, with an ocean path along its southern edge. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and few Canadian cities are as easy to cover on foot.
Harbour and old town
The Inner Harbour is the centre of Victoria, framed by the Parliament Buildings, which are outlined in lights at night, and the Fairmont Empress hotel. Seaplanes and water taxis come and go, and a walkway runs right around the water.
North of the harbour, the old town has brick and stone commercial buildings from the nineteenth century, and Chinatown, the oldest in Canada, with Fan Tan Alley, a passage barely wider than a pair of shoulders in places.
Along the ocean
South of the Parliament Buildings, James Bay leads to the Dallas Road waterfront, a clifftop path along the Strait of Juan de Fuca with views to the Olympic Mountains. Walk out along the Ogden Point breakwater, then continue east past Beacon Hill Park with its gardens and old trees.
A good loop of around ten kilometres: the Inner Harbour, Fisherman's Wharf with its floating homes, Ogden Point, Dallas Road, Beacon Hill Park, and back through downtown and Chinatown.
Easy coverage
Victoria has the mildest climate in Canada, so walking is pleasant most of the year, though winter is wet. The centre is small and dense, and the percentage moves faster here than in most cities.
Longer walks are possible on the Galloping Goose and Lochside regional trails, which run out of the city on old rail lines.
Background walking, private by design
FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Victoria clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.
Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
