Walk Yerevan from Republic Square to the Cascade
Yerevan is the capital of Armenia, built of pink volcanic stone, with Mount Ararat on the horizon. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the compact centre is a ring of streets that fills in fast.
The centre
Republic Square is the main square, surrounded by government buildings of pink tuff stone, with singing fountains in the evenings in summer. Northern Avenue, a pedestrian street, runs north from it to the Opera and Ballet Theatre.
The centre is ringed by a green belt of parks, the Ring Park, and the streets inside it are dense with cafes.
The Cascade
The Cascade is a giant stairway of terraces climbing the hill north of the centre, with sculptures and fountains, and an art centre inside. From the top, Mount Ararat rises over the city on clear days.
The Matenadaran, a museum of ancient manuscripts, stands at the top of Mashtots Avenue. The Vernissage, an open air market, is held near Republic Square at weekends.
Seasons
Summers are hot and dry, winters are cold. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.
The centre is compact. Walking from Republic Square to the top of the Cascade and back is a good loop.
The character who walks with you
FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.
Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Yerevan is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
