Walk Yogyakarta from the Kraton
Yogyakarta is the cultural heart of Java, with a sultan's palace, a water castle and a long street of shops leading to it. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the kampung lanes around the palace are a pleasure to find.
The axis
Yogyakarta is laid out on a line running from Mount Merapi in the north to the sea in the south. The Tugu monument stands on it, and from there Malioboro, the main shopping street, runs south to the Kraton, the sultan's palace, which is still a royal residence.
Two large squares, the alun-alun, sit north and south of the palace. In the southern one, people try to walk blindfolded between two banyan trees.
Lanes and the water castle
Around the Kraton, the old walled quarter is full of narrow lanes and kampung neighbourhoods with batik workshops and small houses. Taman Sari, the old water castle with bathing pools and an underground mosque, is hidden among them.
A day: the Tugu, Malioboro, the Kraton, the lanes to Taman Sari, and the southern square at night. Prambanan and Borobudur are a drive away.
Coverage
The centre is flat and fairly compact, and the lanes add a dense, fine pattern. Traffic on the main roads is heavy, so the lanes are often the nicer route.
It is hot and humid all year, with a wet season from November to March.
Share the shape you walked
After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Yogyakarta, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.
It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
