A fog of war map app for Android
Many real-world fog of war apps are iPhone only. FOG runs on Android too: the whole world starts under fog, every street you walk is cleared permanently, and it all stays on your phone.
What it does
Open FOG and the world map is covered in fog. Walk, and a circle of roughly 120 metres clears around you. Walk somewhere else and that clears too. Nothing fills back in. Over weeks and months the map becomes a picture of everywhere you have actually been, drawn in the gaps in the fog. The longer explanation is on what a fog of war map is.
It works anywhere on Earth, for walking, running and riding.
How it runs on Android
FOG can keep exploring with the app closed and the screen off. Turn on background exploring in Settings and grant location permission; Android then shows a persistent notification while FOG is exploring, so you always know it is on and can switch it off. That notification is Android's rule for background location, and it is the honest arrangement.
You can choose kilometres or miles, a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a fog density. A paint tool can clear fog by hand for the view, but only walking counts toward your stats.
What you collect
- Ranks that climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up to Atlas.
- A collection of the countries, regions and cities you have stood in.
- A logbook with a page for every month and year you were out.
- Five character paths for Wander, your explorer, each with five pieces of gear earned on foot.
- Walk cards: the shape of a walk you just finished, ready to share.
Private by default
There is no account and no sign-up. Your trail is processed and stored only on the device, never uploaded. There are no ads and no app analytics. You can export a GPX backup from Settings whenever you like, which is worth doing, because the map lives only on that phone.
Price
Exploring is free. FOG Unlimited is a single purchase through Google Play that adds the ranks beyond Scout, the three paid character paths and history import from Google Timeline and GPX. There is no subscription. Get it on Google Play; it is also on iOS.
