A private location history app with no account
A record of everywhere you go is one of the most sensitive files a phone can hold. If you want that record, the safest place for it is on your own device, with no account and no server in between.
What to look for
- No account. If there is no account, there is no profile to link your movements to.
- On-device storage. Data that is never uploaded cannot leak from a server.
- No ads and no analytics. Both usually mean data leaving the phone.
- Export. You should be able to take your own data out in a standard format.
- Clear background behaviour. You should know when it is recording.
How FOG handles it
FOG keeps your entire trail on the device. Nothing is uploaded, ever. There is no account and no sign-up, no ads and no app analytics. Background exploring is opt-in, with a plain explanation before you turn it on, and on Android a notification stays up the whole time so you always know it is running.
You can export a backup of your trail as a GPX file whenever you like, and reset all exploration from Settings if you want it gone.
The trade-off
Privacy has a cost: with no cloud, there is no automatic sync between devices and no copy on a server if you lose your phone. That is why FOG reminds you how long it has been since your last backup. Keep a GPX export somewhere safe, and you have the record without the risk.
What the record becomes
In FOG the history is a map. The world starts under fog and every place you have been is cleared, permanently. It shows the area you have covered, the countries, regions and cities you have stood in, and a logbook for each month and year. Exploring is free; FOG Unlimited is one purchase. It is a phone app, on iOS and Android.
