FOG
The granite city by the North Sea

Walk Aberdeen, from Union Street to Footdee

Aberdeen is Scotland's granite city, built of grey stone that glitters in the sun, with a long beach and an old fishing village at the harbour mouth. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the centre and the sea front are a good first map.

The granite centre

Union Street is the main street, a long straight line of granite buildings through the centre. Marischal College, one of the largest granite buildings in the world, with a tall Gothic facade, sits just off it on Broad Street.

The Castlegate, at the east end of Union Street, is the old market square with the Mercat Cross. The harbour, with supply ships for the North Sea oil fields, lies just south.

Footdee and the beach

Footdee, called Fittie, is a small fishing village of squares of cottages at the harbour mouth, with painted sheds and gardens. From there, the beach esplanade runs north for a few kilometres along a wide sandy beach.

Old Aberdeen, to the north, is a separate old town with cobbled streets, King's College with its crowned tower and St Machar's Cathedral. The walk there along the High Street is like going into a village.

Weather

Aberdeen is cool and windy, with long summer days and short winter ones. Dolphins can sometimes be seen at the harbour mouth from Torry Battery, across the water.

The city is compact, and Union Street, the harbour, Footdee and the beach make a long loop.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Aberdeen walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
