Walk St Andrews from the cathedral to the Old Course
St Andrews is a small Scottish town of three medieval streets, a ruined cathedral, the oldest university in Scotland and the home of golf. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the whole town can be finished in a day or two.
Three streets
The old town is built along three parallel streets, North Street, Market Street and South Street, which all run toward the ruined cathedral at the east end. The University of St Andrews, founded in the early fifteenth century, has buildings all through the town, including St Salvator's Chapel on North Street.
The cathedral ruins and St Rule's Tower, which you can climb for views, stand on the headland. St Andrews Castle, another ruin, sits on the cliffs just north.
Golf and the sea
The Old Course, the most famous golf course in the world, lies at the west end of town. On Sundays the course is usually closed to golf and open to walkers. The Swilcan Bridge, a small stone bridge on the eighteenth hole, is a famous photo stop.
West Sands, the long beach beside the course, runs for about three kilometres. The Fife Coastal Path passes through town in both directions.
Weather
St Andrews is windy and cool for much of the year. Summer days are long, and winter days are short and dark.
The town is small, and the three streets, the shore and the beach make a neat map. The cobbled wynds between the streets are easy to miss.
How FOG keeps score here
FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 120 metres around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.
There is no account, no sign-up and no cloud. The trail lives on your phone and nowhere else, and you can export a GPX backup whenever you like. Exploring is free; one purchase of FOG Unlimited adds the higher ranks, all five character paths and history import, with no subscription.
