Walk Ahmedabad's pols
Ahmedabad was the first city in India to be named a World Heritage City, for its old walled city of pols, dense neighbourhoods of carved wooden houses. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the pols are a maze worth filling.
The walled city
The old city is made of pols, neighbourhoods of houses with carved wooden fronts, closed by gates, with bird feeders, small temples and hidden lanes. A heritage walk through them starts each morning from the Swaminarayan temple at Kalupur.
The Jama Masjid, built in 1424, has a courtyard and hundreds of pillars. The Sidi Saiyyed Mosque is famous for its carved stone window of a tree. Manek Chowk becomes a food market at night.
The river
The Sabarmati Riverfront has long promenades on both banks of the river through the city. The Atal Bridge, a footbridge with a curved roof, crosses it.
The Sabarmati Ashram, where Gandhi lived for years and from where he began the Salt March in 1930, stands on the riverbank in the north.
Heat
Ahmedabad is very hot from March to June. Winter is the best season, and the kite festival of Uttarayan in January fills the rooftops.
The pols are dense and twisting, and the riverfront adds long straight lines.
Background walking, private by design
FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Ahmedabad clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.
Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
