Walk Aix-en-Provence from the Cours Mirabeau

The Cours and the two halves
The Cours Mirabeau is a broad avenue shaded by plane trees, with cafes on one side, mansions on the other and fountains along its length, starting from the big Rotonde fountain. It divides the town in two.
South of the Cours, the Mazarin quarter is a grid of seventeenth century streets with the Fountain of the Four Dolphins. North lies the older town of crooked lanes, small squares such as the Place d'Albertas, and markets in the Place Richelme and around the town hall with its clock tower.
Up to Cezanne
At the north end of the old town stands the Cathedral of Saint-Sauveur. Keep climbing north on the Avenue Paul Cezanne to the painter's studio on the Lauves hill, and further up to the Terrain des Peintres, a small park looking out at the Montagne Sainte-Victoire he painted again and again.
A good loop: the Rotonde, the Cours, the Mazarin quarter, back through the old town to the cathedral, then up to the studio and the painters' viewpoint.
Summer heat
Aix is very hot in July and August, and the climb to the Lauves is steady. Walk it in the morning.
The centre itself is compact and gently sloped, and the fountains are a welcome sight in the heat.
