Walk the walled city of Avignon

Avignon was the seat of the popes in the fourteenth century, and its palace, broken bridge and full ring of ramparts still frame the old town. FOG covers the map until you walk it, and the walls give the city a clear outline to fill.

Palace, garden, bridge

The Palais des Papes is one of the largest Gothic buildings in Europe, rising over a wide square. Just above it, the Rocher des Doms is a garden on a rocky outcrop, with views over the Rhone, the Pont Saint-Benezet and Villeneuve-les-Avignon on the far bank.

The Pont Saint-Benezet, the bridge of the famous song, stops partway across the river, its remaining arches standing in the water. The Place de l'Horloge, with its theatre and town hall, is the busy centre a few steps south of the palace.

Inside and around the walls

The ramparts run unbroken around the old town, with gates leading inside. Walking the full outer circuit draws a ring on the map, and the streets inside fill fast because the area is compact.

Rue des Teinturiers, in the east, follows a small canal of the Sorgue, with plane trees and old water wheels. Across the Rhone, the Ile de la Barthelasse is a large flat island of farms and paths, and Villeneuve-les-Avignon has the Fort Saint-Andre on its hill.

Wind, heat and the festival

Summers are hot, and the mistral can blow hard and cold through the Rhone valley. In July the theatre festival fills every street, so walks are slower and livelier.

The old town is mostly flat apart from the climb to the Rocher des Doms.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Avignon clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
