FOG
A long Corniche on the Mediterranean

Walk Alexandria along the Corniche

Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great, curves along the Mediterranean for kilometres, with a seafront Corniche, a fortress where the lighthouse stood and a new great library. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the Corniche draws one long arc.

The Corniche

The Corniche runs along the Eastern Harbour and far beyond it along the sea, with fishing boats and cafes. At its western end, the Citadel of Qaitbay, a fifteenth century fortress, stands on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the wonders of the ancient world.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a modern library inspired by the ancient one, stands on the Corniche east of the centre, a tilted disc covered in carved letters from many alphabets.

The old centre

Saad Zaghloul Square and the streets behind it are the old centre of the city, with cafes and old buildings from the time when Alexandria was a cosmopolitan port. Raml Station, nearby, is the hub of the old trams.

The Roman Amphitheatre at Kom el Dikka and the catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, further south, show the Roman city. Pompey's Pillar stands on a hill in the southwest.

Coverage

Alexandria is cooler than Cairo in summer, with a sea breeze. Winter brings rain and storms.

The Corniche from the library to the citadel is a few kilometres and the obvious first line. The city stretches far east along the coast.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Alexandria walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
