Walk Luxor from temple to temple

Luxor stands on the site of ancient Thebes, with two of the greatest temples of Egypt on the east bank of the Nile and the tombs of the pharaohs across the river. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the walk between the temples draws a line through three thousand years.

Luxor Temple and the avenue

Luxor Temple stands in the middle of the town on the east bank, open into the evening and lit at night. From its gate, the Avenue of Sphinxes, an ancient processional way lined with sphinxes, runs north for nearly three kilometres to Karnak. It was excavated and opened to walkers in 2021.

Karnak, the largest temple complex of ancient Egypt, has the great Hypostyle Hall with its forest of giant columns, obelisks and a sacred lake.

The Corniche and the town

The Corniche runs along the Nile on the east bank, with feluccas, sailing boats, at the water's edge and views across to the hills of the west bank. The Luxor Museum stands on it, between the two temples.

The souq, just inland from Luxor Temple, sells spices, clothes and souvenirs. Ferries cross the river to the west bank, where the Valley of the Kings, the Colossi of Memnon and the temple of Hatshepsut lie a few kilometres from the water.

Heat

Luxor is extremely hot from May to September. Winter, from November to February, is the best season, with warm days and cool nights. Start at dawn in any season.

The walk from Luxor Temple to Karnak along the avenue is the line to start with, and the Corniche makes the return.

How FOG keeps score here

FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 120 metres around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.

There is no account, no sign-up and no cloud. The trail lives on your phone and nowhere else, and you can export a GPX backup whenever you like. Exploring is free; one purchase of FOG Unlimited adds the higher ranks, all five character paths and history import, with no subscription.
