FOG
A capital of circles, brick and boats

Walk Annapolis from the dock to the State House

Annapolis is Maryland's small capital, a colonial town of brick streets that radiate from two circles down to a harbour full of sailboats. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the historic district is small enough to finish.

Two circles and a dock

The town plan from the 1690s places the Maryland State House on State Circle, the highest point, and St. Anne's Church on Church Circle nearby. Streets radiate from both, so the map has the shape of spokes rather than a grid.

Main Street runs downhill from Church Circle to City Dock, the harbour at the heart of town, known locally as Ego Alley because boats parade slowly up and down it. The State House is the oldest still in legislative use in the country.

The Academy and the water

The United States Naval Academy sits beside the old town, and visitors with photo ID can walk the grounds through the visitor gate, including the chapel and the waterfront. Across Spa Creek, the Eastport neighbourhood is reached by a short bridge.

St. John's College, one of the oldest colleges in the country, has a lawn just north of State Circle. A loop of the circles, the dock, Eastport and back gives a good first map.

Practical notes

The historic district is compact, under a mile across, and a day of walking clears most of it. Summer is hot and humid, and the town is busiest during the sailing season and the boat shows in autumn.

The radiating streets make the map look like a wheel, which is unusual for an American town.

How FOG keeps score here

FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 400 feet around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.

There is no account, no sign-up and no cloud. The trail lives on your phone and nowhere else, and you can export a GPX backup whenever you like. Exploring is free; one purchase of FOG Unlimited adds the higher ranks, all five character paths and history import, with no subscription.
