FOG
An upper city behind Venetian walls

Walk Bergamo from the lower city to the top

Bergamo comes in two parts: the busy lower city on the plain and the walled upper city on the hill above it. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the climb links them in a satisfying line.

The upper city

The Citta Alta sits on a hill, ringed by Venetian walls that are a UNESCO site. A funicular climbs from the lower city, but steps and paths go up too. Inside the walls, the Piazza Vecchia is the main square, with the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica and the colourful Colleoni Chapel right behind it.

Via Gombito and Via Colleoni form the main street across the upper city, from the Rocca fortress at one end to the Cittadella and the Colle Aperto at the other.

Walls and San Vigilio

A broad avenue runs along the top of the walls for much of their circuit, shaded by trees and looking out over the plain. Walking the full loop draws the outline of the upper city.

From the Colle Aperto, a second funicular or a steep road climbs to San Vigilio, a hill above the upper city with a small castle and views over the Alps. Down in the lower city, the Sentierone is the main promenade, and the Accademia Carrara holds a major art collection.

Two levels

The upper city is steep and cobbled, and the lower city is flat. Walking up rather than taking the funicular is the best way to clear the slope.

Summers are hot and humid, winters cold and sometimes foggy.

The character who walks with you

FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.

Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Bergamo is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
