Under the arcades
The old town is a UNESCO site, with long parallel streets running down the peninsula: the Marktgasse, the Kramgasse and the Gerechtigkeitsgasse. They are lined with arcades, so you can walk for kilometres under cover, and decorated with painted fountains.
The Zytglogge is the medieval clock tower in the middle, with a moving figure show on the hour. The Bundeshaus, the federal parliament, looks south over the Aare, and the Munster has the tallest church tower in Switzerland.
Around the loop
At the tip of the peninsula, the Nydeggbrucke crosses the Aare to the Barenpark, where bears live on the riverbank. Climb from there to the Rosengarten, a rose garden with the classic view back over the old town.
Paths follow the river around the loop, and the Marzili, below the Bundeshaus, is where locals swim in the fast-flowing Aare in summer. The Gurten is a hill south of the city with a funicular and views of the Alps.

The old town streets slope down toward the river. The arcades help in rain or snow.
Winters are cold and summers warm. The old town is compact and fills quickly.
