Walk Lucerne over the Chapel Bridge
Lucerne sits where the Reuss leaves the lake, crossed by covered wooden bridges and watched over by a medieval wall with nine towers. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the lakefront adds long lines on either side.
Bridges and old town
The Kapellbrucke, the Chapel Bridge, is a covered wooden bridge with painted panels under its roof and the stone Wasserturm beside it. Downstream, the Spreuerbrucke is another covered bridge with a dance of death painted inside.
The old town on the north bank has painted facades and squares such as the Weinmarkt and the Kornmarkt. The Jesuit Church stands on the south bank, along the river.
Walls and lake
The Musegg Wall runs across the hill behind the old town with nine towers, several of which you can climb in summer. North east of the old town, the Lion Monument is a dying lion carved into a rock face.
The lake promenade runs east from the bridges along the Nationalquai, past the Hofkirche, with views of the mountains. On the south bank, the KKL concert hall sits by the water next to the station. Pilatus and Rigi rise above the lake for longer trips.
Lake weather
Lucerne has cool, wet weather, with rain at any time of year and snow in winter. The old town is mostly flat, with a climb to the Musegg Wall.
In summer the bridges are crowded, so the early morning is the best time to cross them.
Share the shape you walked
After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Lucerne, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.
It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
