Walk Bloomington, Indiana
Bloomington is an Indiana college town built of local limestone, with a courthouse square and a campus a short walk apart. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the town is compact enough to clear in a season.
Square to campus
The Monroe County Courthouse sits in the middle of the square downtown, surrounded by shops and restaurants. Kirkwood Avenue runs east from the square to the Sample Gates, the limestone entrance to Indiana University.
The old campus beyond the gates is wooded, with limestone halls set among trees and a small creek running through it. Dunn's Woods, in the oldest corner, is a patch of forest kept since the campus was founded.
Trails and neighbourhoods
The B-Line Trail is a paved path on an old rail line that runs north to south through downtown, a few blocks west of the square. It passes the farmers market at Showers Plaza, which runs on Saturdays through the warm months.
The neighbourhoods around the square, Prospect Hill to the west and Elm Heights south of campus, have old houses and quiet streets. A loop from the square to the gates, through campus, and back along the B-Line clears the core in an afternoon.
Seasons
Summers are hot and humid, winters are cold with some snow. Spring, with the campus trees in flower, and autumn are the best times to walk.
Bloomington is small, and the core fills in fast. The limestone quarries outside town are on private land, so stick to the parks and trails.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Bloomington clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
