Walk Boulder under the Flatirons
Boulder sits right at the foot of the Rockies, with a pedestrian mall, a university and a creek path running through town. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and here the trails go straight up from the edge of town.
Town
The Pearl Street Mall is four car free blocks of brick paving, flower beds and street performers in the middle of downtown, with the old county courthouse at one end. The streets around it, Spruce, Walnut and the residential blocks of Mapleton Hill, make a compact grid.
The University of Colorado campus lies south of downtown, with red sandstone buildings and tile roofs. The Hill, the student district on its west side, is a few blocks of shops and cafes.
The creek and the mountains
The Boulder Creek Path runs east to west through the whole city along the water, paved and mostly shaded, and it links the downtown edge to the mouth of Boulder Canyon. It is the easiest long line on the map.
Chautauqua Park, on the southwest edge of town, is the gateway to the Flatirons, the tilted slabs of rock above the city. Trails climb from the meadow toward them, and a loop up to the first Flatiron viewpoint and back adds a steep strip of map with big views.
Altitude and weather
Boulder is at about 5,400 feet, so take it easy on climbs at first and carry water. Afternoon storms are common in summer. Winters are sunny between snowfalls and the snow often melts within days.
A day of town, creek and Chautauqua clears a long, satisfying shape. The open space trails around the city go much further when you want more.
Background walking, private by design
FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Boulder clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.
Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
