Walk Colorado Springs and the Garden of the Gods

Colorado Springs sits at the foot of Pikes Peak, with red rock formations and canyons on the edge of town. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the trails here put real mountains on the map.

The red rocks

The Garden of the Gods is a free park of tall red sandstone formations on the west side of the city, with paved paths among the rocks and longer trails around them. Pikes Peak rises behind it.

Red Rock Canyon Open Space, just south, has more red rock and quieter trails. Both make good loops of a few miles.

Old towns

Downtown Colorado Springs is a grid of wide streets with the Pioneers Museum in the old courthouse. Old Colorado City, to the west, was a separate town and keeps its old main street of brick buildings.

Manitou Springs, further west at the foot of the mountain, is a small town with mineral springs you can taste from fountains. The Manitou Incline, a steep trail of old railway ties, climbs about 2,000 feet in less than a mile.

Altitude

Colorado Springs is at about 6,000 feet, so climbs feel harder. Carry water and sun protection. Summer afternoons often bring storms.

The city is spread out, so focus on the west side, where the rocks, the old towns and the mountain are close together.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Colorado Springs clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
