FOG
A Saxon town below the Tampa

Walk Brasov under the mountain

Brasov is a Saxon town in Transylvania, its old centre tucked under the wooded Tampa mountain with a giant sign on top. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the old town, walls and mountain draw distinct shapes.

The old centre

The Piata Sfatului, the council square, is the heart of the old town, with the old council house in the middle. The Black Church, a large Gothic church named for fire damage, stands just off the square.

Strada Sforii, Rope Street, is one of the narrowest streets in Europe. Catherine's Gate, with its small corner towers, is the oldest surviving gate, and the White and Black Towers stand on the hill above the walls.

Schei and Tampa

South west of the old town, the Schei district was the Romanian quarter, with the Church of St Nicholas and the first Romanian school. A promenade runs below the Tampa along the old walls.

The Tampa mountain rises directly over the town, reached by cable car or a hiking trail through the forest. The view from the top, next to the large Brasov sign, takes in the whole town.

Mountain climate

Brasov has cold, snowy winters and warm summers. The old town is flat, and the Tampa is a steep climb.

Bran Castle and the Carpathians make for longer trips from the city.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Brasov walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
