Walk Cluj-Napoca from the Piata Unirii
Cluj-Napoca is the lively capital of Transylvania, a university city with a Gothic church on its main square and green hills around it. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the centre fills in fast.
The centre
The Piata Unirii is the main square, dominated by the Gothic St Michael's Church and the equestrian statue of Matthias Corvinus, born in the city. The Piata Muzeului, nearby, is the oldest square of the city.
The old town has baroque palaces, churches and student bars. The Tailors' Bastion is one of the few surviving parts of the medieval walls.
Parks and hills
The Central Park, to the west, has a lake, the old Casino building and paths along the Somes river. North of the river, the Cetatuia hill offers a view over the city from the site of a former fortress.
South of the centre, the Botanical Garden climbs a slope with greenhouses and a Japanese garden. Further west, the Hoia forest is large and wooded.
Hills and seasons
The centre is flat, while the hills around are steep. Winters are cold, summers warm.
A good loop: the Piata Unirii, the Piata Muzeului, out to the Central Park and along the Somes, up the Cetatuia steps for the view, then back across the river and south to the Botanical Garden. The city is busy with students and festivals in summer.
