Walk Brighton from the Lanes to the sea
Brighton is a seaside city with a pier, a palace that looks like it belongs in India and a maze of narrow alleys called the Lanes. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the seafront draws one long bright line.
The Lanes and North Laine
The Lanes are a tangle of narrow alleys in the oldest part of the city, full of jewellery shops, pubs and cafes. North Laine, just north, is a grid of small streets with independent shops, vintage clothing and cafes.
The Royal Pavilion, built for the Prince Regent, is an extravagant palace with onion domes and minarets, set in gardens between the two districts and the sea.
The seafront
The seafront runs for kilometres along a pebble beach, from Hove in the west to the marina in the east. Brighton Palace Pier stretches out to sea with rides and arcades. The skeleton of the West Pier stands in the water further west, near the i360 viewing tower.
The Undercliff Walk, east of the marina, runs below chalk cliffs toward Rottingdean.
Practical notes
Brighton is hilly away from the seafront, with streets climbing steeply from the station. The weather is mild, and the seafront is windy.
The Lanes and North Laine are dense, and filling every alley is a challenge. Kemptown, east of the centre, adds streets of Regency houses.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Brighton clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
