A cathedral city inside medieval walls

Walk Canterbury inside the walls

Canterbury is a cathedral city in Kent, with medieval walls around most of its centre and a river running through it. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the old city is small enough to finish in a day.

The cathedral and the centre

Canterbury Cathedral, the mother church of the Church of England, is where Thomas Becket was killed in 1170, and it became one of the great pilgrimage destinations of the Middle Ages. It is reached through Christ Church Gate from the Buttermarket.

The High Street runs through the old city from the Westgate, a medieval gatehouse, past half timbered buildings and over the River Stour. The cathedral, St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church together form a World Heritage site.

The walls and the river

The city walls survive around much of the old city, and you can walk along the top of a long section on the east side, past the Dane John Gardens with its mound.

The River Stour runs through the centre, with punts and small boats in summer. Westgate Gardens, beside the gatehouse, have a riverside path.

A day

Canterbury is compact, and the walk around the walls is about three kilometres. The city is busy in summer, with day visitors from London, and quiet in the evenings.

The University of Kent campus sits on a hill north of the city, with views back over the cathedral.

The character who walks with you

FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.

Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Canterbury is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
