Walk Bukhara's old town
Bukhara is one of the great cities of the Silk Road, with an old centre of mosques, madrasas and trading domes around a pool shaded by mulberry trees. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the old town is compact enough to finish.
Lyabi-Hauz
Lyabi-Hauz is a square around a pool, shaded by old mulberry trees and surrounded by a madrasa and a khanaka. It is the social heart of the old town, with tea houses by the water.
From there, the trading domes, covered bazaars at the crossings of old streets, lead north. They still sell carpets, knives, hats and jewellery.
Kalon and the Ark
The Kalon Minaret, built in 1127, is the tower of the Poi Kalon complex, with the Kalon Mosque and the Mir-i-Arab Madrasa facing each other across a square. It is the symbol of Bukhara.
The Ark, a massive fortress of the emirs, stands to the west, with the Bolo Hauz Mosque, with its painted wooden columns, across the road. The Samanid Mausoleum, one of the oldest buildings in Central Asia, sits in a park nearby.
Heat
Summers are very hot and dry. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.
The old town is flat and compact, a World Heritage site. Chor Minor, a small gatehouse with four towers, is a short walk east of the centre.
