Walk Chania around the old harbour
Chania, on the north coast of Crete, has a Venetian harbour with a lighthouse and an old town of narrow lanes with Venetian and Ottoman layers. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the harbour wall draws a lovely curve to start with.
The harbour
The Venetian harbour is lined with old buildings, cafes and the Kioutsouk Hasan Mosque, its domes a landmark. A long breakwater leads out to the lighthouse, and walking it gives the classic view back over the town.
On the western side, the Firkas fortress holds the Maritime Museum. Behind the harbour, the Kastelli hill was the oldest part of the town.
Old town and beyond
Topanas, the old Venetian quarter, and Splantzia, the old Turkish quarter, are full of narrow lanes, mansions and small squares. In Splantzia, the church of Agios Nikolaos has both a minaret and a bell tower.
The Municipal Market is a cross-shaped market hall. Skridlof, the leather street, is close by. West of the old town, Nea Chora has a sandy beach and fish restaurants, and to the east, the Koum Kapi waterfront leads toward Halepa.
Hot and bright
Chania is very hot in summer, with little shade in the harbour. Walk early or late.
The old town is flat, compact and full of crowds in high season. Start at the harbour, walk out to the lighthouse and back, then work through Topanas and Splantzia to the market, and finish along Koum Kapi as the sun goes down.
