FOG
Franklin Street and the oldest public campus

Walk Chapel Hill and its campus

Chapel Hill is a small town built around the University of North Carolina, with brick paths, old oaks and one main street. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the whole town is a realistic thing to finish.

Franklin Street and the quads

Franklin Street is the main street, a mile or so of restaurants, bookshops and bars facing the campus. On the other side of the stone wall is McCorkle Place, the oldest quad, with the Old Well, a small domed rotunda that is the symbol of the university.

South of it, Polk Place is the larger quad, framed by the Wilson Library and South Building. Brick paths cross both under big oaks, and the campus goes on south to the Bell Tower and Kenan Stadium.

Gardens and side streets

The Coker Arboretum, on the east side of the old campus, is a small garden of paths under an arbour of vines. The North Carolina Botanical Garden lies further south with trails through native woods.

The neighbourhoods north of Franklin, with old houses and big trees, and the town of Carrboro just to the west along the same street, make easy extensions. Carrboro has its own small centre around the Weaver Street Market.

Completing it

Chapel Hill is compact and green, and a few walks clear most of downtown and the old campus. Summers are hot and humid, spring is the best season, with the dogwoods and azaleas in flower.

Durham and Raleigh are nearby for bigger maps, but here the satisfaction is in finishing a whole town.

Share the shape you walked

After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Chapel Hill, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.

It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose miles in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
