FOG
The Lawn, the Downtown Mall and the Blue Ridge

Walk Charlottesville from the Lawn to the Mall

Charlottesville has two centres, the university around Jefferson's Lawn and a brick pedestrian mall downtown, with the Blue Ridge on the horizon. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the walk between the two lights up the town.

The university

The Academical Village at the University of Virginia, designed by Thomas Jefferson, is a World Heritage site together with his house at Monticello. The Lawn is a long terraced green with the Rotunda at its head and pavilions and student rooms along both sides.

Behind the pavilions are walled gardens, linked by serpentine brick walls only one brick thick. The Corner, a strip of shops and restaurants, sits across University Avenue.

Down to downtown

From the Corner, West Main Street runs east about a mile and a half to downtown. The Downtown Mall is a brick pedestrian street of eight blocks, lined with restaurants, a cinema and bookshops, with an outdoor amphitheatre at the east end.

Court Square, just north, is the old centre of the county around its courthouse. The neighbourhoods of Belmont, south of the mall, and Fifeville, by West Main, are good for adding streets.

Hills and the mountains

The town is hilly, but the walk from the Lawn to the Mall is gentle. Monticello is a few miles southeast and is reached on foot by the Saunders Monticello Trail through the woods.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons, and the Blue Ridge is visible from many high points in town.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Charlottesville walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
