Walk Chiang Mai's old city
Chiang Mai's old city is a near perfect square inside a moat, full of temples. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the square makes a clean shape to fill in, lane by lane.
The square
The old city is a square about one and a half kilometres on each side, surrounded by a moat and the remains of old walls, with a gate in the middle of each side. Tha Phae Gate, on the east, is the main meeting point.
Inside, the streets are lined with temples: Wat Phra Singh, with its golden chedi, and Wat Chedi Luang, a huge ruined brick chedi. Small lanes, called sois, lead off the main streets.
Walking streets and the mountain
On Sunday evenings, Ratchadamnoen Road becomes a long walking street market from Tha Phae Gate. Outside the old city, Nimmanhaemin, to the west, is a district of cafes and shops.
Doi Suthep, the mountain west of the city, has a temple near the top reached by a long naga staircase, and a trail up through the forest. Walk the perimeter of the moat first, then fill in the square.
Coverage
The old city is flat and compact, and a few days can clear most of it. The moat outline makes a neat square on the map.
The cool season, from November to February, is the best. From February to April, smoke from burning can make the air poor.
The character who walks with you
