FOG
A city on an island in the River Lee

Walk Cork across the river channels

Cork's centre sits on an island between two channels of the River Lee, with bridges on every side and hills rising north and south. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the island makes a satisfying map to fill.

The island

The centre of Cork is an island between the north and south channels of the River Lee. St Patrick's Street, the main shopping street, curves across it, and the English Market, a covered food market since the eighteenth century, sits in the middle.

Oliver Plunkett Street and the lanes around it are full of pubs and shops. Bridges cross the channels on both sides, so loops around the island are easy.

Up the hills

North of the river, Shandon is an old neighbourhood on a steep hill, with the tower of St Anne's Church, whose bells visitors can ring. South, St Fin Barre's Cathedral has three spires.

University College Cork, west of the centre, has a quadrangle of grey stone buildings. Fitzgerald Park, beside the river, links it to the Mardyke walk.

Rain and coverage

Cork is mild and wet, with rain at any time of year. The centre is compact, and a day clears most of the island.

The hills add steep streets. Cobh, a harbour town, is a short train ride away.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Cork clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
