FOG
Latin Quarter to the prom

Walk Galway from the Latin Quarter to Salthill

Galway is a small, lively city on the west coast of Ireland, with a medieval centre and a long seaside promenade. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and you can light the whole centre in a day.

The centre

Eyre Square is the starting point. From it, Shop Street, High Street and Quay Street run down through the Latin Quarter, a lively pedestrian route of pubs, shops and buskers, to the River Corrib. The Spanish Arch, part of the old city wall, stands by the water.

The streets are short and medieval in layout, so a slow walk clears many of them. Galway Cathedral stands across the river, with the salmon weir nearby.

To the sea

From the Spanish Arch, cross the river to the Claddagh, the old fishing village, and walk the shore around to the Salthill Promenade. The prom runs for a couple of kilometres along Galway Bay, and tradition says you kick the wall at the far end before turning back.

A loop of around eight kilometres: Eyre Square, the Latin Quarter, the Spanish Arch, the Claddagh, Salthill to the end of the prom, and back through the town.

Weather and coverage

It rains often, and the wind off the Atlantic is strong. Bring a waterproof. The town is flat by the river.

Galway is small, so the percentage of the city moves fast, and the prom adds a long bright line along the bay.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Galway clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
