Walk the medina of Fez
Fez el-Bali is one of the largest car free urban areas in the world, a medieval medina of thousands of alleys. FOG starts the map dark and clears only where you walk, and here every wrong turn is new ground.
The medina
Fez el-Bali, the old medina, is a World Heritage site and an enormous maze of narrow lanes, too tight for cars, where donkeys still carry goods. Enter through Bab Bou Jeloud, the blue gate, and two main streets lead down through the souks.
The Bou Inania Madrasa has fine carved wood and tile work. Al Quaraouiyine, founded in the ninth century, is considered one of the oldest continuously operating universities in the world.
Tanneries and views
The Chouara tannery, with its vats of dye, is viewed from the terraces of the surrounding leather shops. Above the medina, the Merinid tombs on the hill give a view over the whole old city.
Fes el-Jdid, the newer medieval town, has the royal palace gates and the old Jewish quarter. The French era Ville Nouvelle has broad avenues.
Getting lost
The medina's lanes are narrow and high walled, so GPS can wander, and many dead ends look like through routes. That is part of the fun, and the map will slowly fill with an extraordinary web.
Summers are hot; spring and autumn are best. Accept that you will get lost.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Fez clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
