FOG
Tunnels, alleys and painted hills

Walk Guanajuato's alleys

Guanajuato is a silver mining city in a narrow valley, with coloured houses stacked on the slopes, alleys too narrow for cars and roads running in tunnels underneath. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the tangle of alleys is a fine challenge.

The centre

The Jardin de la Union, a small triangular plaza shaded by laurel trees, is the heart of the city, with the Teatro Juarez beside it. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato, painted yellow, stands on the Plaza de la Paz nearby.

The University of Guanajuato building, with a grand stairway, is a short walk away. The Mercado Hidalgo is a market in an iron hall.

Alleys and hills

The city is a maze of callejones, alleys that climb between houses. The Callejon del Beso is so narrow that, as the legend goes, lovers could kiss from balconies on either side.

The Pipila monument, a statue of a hero of the independence war, stands on a hill above the centre, reached by a funicular or a steep climb, with a view over the coloured city.

Underground

The roads of Guanajuato run partly in tunnels under the city, so the streets above are quieter.

The city is at about 2,000 metres and very hilly. The Cervantino festival, in October, fills it with performances.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Guanajuato walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
