Walk Hue's citadel
Hue was the capital of Vietnam's last dynasty, and its walled citadel still stands on the Perfume River, with the Imperial City inside. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the square citadel makes a striking shape on the map.
The citadel
The Hue citadel is a huge square fortress with walls more than two kilometres long on each side, surrounded by a moat. Inside, the Imperial City, with its own walls, held the palaces of the Nguyen emperors, entered through the Ngo Mon gate.
Much was damaged in war, but restoration continues, and the halls, gates and gardens are a World Heritage site. Streets of houses and gardens fill the rest of the citadel.
The river
The Perfume River runs past the citadel. The Truong Tien Bridge, an iron bridge lit in colours at night, crosses to the south bank, where the newer city has hotels and a riverside park. The Dong Ba Market sits on the north bank just outside the citadel.
The Thien Mu Pagoda, with a seven storey tower, stands on the riverbank west of the city. The royal tombs lie further south along the river.
Weather
Hue has a rainy season from September to December, with floods possible. Spring is the best season. Summers are hot.
The citadel is flat and the walls make a clear square. Walking around the inside of the walls and through the Imperial City fills in a big shape.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Hue clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
