Walk Jeonju Hanok Village

Jeonju is a Korean city famous for its hanok village of hundreds of traditional houses and for its food, especially bibimbap. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the hanok village is a dense grid of lanes to fill.

The hanok village

Jeonju Hanok Village has hundreds of traditional houses with curved tiled roofs, many now guesthouses, tea houses and shops. The main streets are busy, and the side lanes are quiet.

Gyeonggijeon, a shrine built for the portrait of the founder of the Joseon dynasty, has a garden of bamboo and old trees. Jeondong Cathedral, a brick church in Romanesque style, stands across the road.

Around the village

Omokdae, a small hill on the edge of the village, has a pavilion with views over the rooftops. The Jeonjucheon stream runs along the south side, with paths on both banks.

Pungnammun, the old south gate of the city, stands near the Nambu Market, which has a night market at weekends.

Coverage

The hanok village is compact and flat, and a day covers it with the gate and the market. The Jeonju International Film Festival is held in spring.

Summers are hot and humid. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.
