Walk Gyeongju among the royal tombs

Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom for nearly a thousand years, and today it is a city of grassy royal tombs, temples and a lake palace. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the historic centre is flat and open.

The tombs

Daereungwon is a park of huge grassy burial mounds of Silla kings and nobles in the middle of the city. One tomb, Cheonmachong, is open inside to show how it was built. The nearby streets have more mounds among the houses.

Hwangnidan-gil, next to the tombs, is a street of traditional houses turned into cafes and shops.

The old centre

Cheomseongdae, a stone tower from the seventh century, is one of the oldest observatories in East Asia. It stands in an open field of flowers. Gyochon Village, with traditional houses, and the Woljeonggyo bridge, a reconstructed covered bridge, are a short walk south.

Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, a reconstructed palace by a lake, is beautiful lit up at night. Bulguksa Temple and the Seokguram Grotto lie in the hills to the east, a bus ride away.

Coverage

The historic centre is flat, with paths between the sites, and a day of walking covers most of it. Bicycles are popular too.

Spring, with cherry blossoms, and autumn are the best seasons. The whole area is part of a World Heritage site.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Gyeongju walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
