Walk Fort Kochi and Mattancherry
Kochi is a port city in Kerala where Portuguese, Dutch and British traders left churches and warehouses, and Chinese fishing nets still line the shore. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and Fort Kochi is small enough to finish.
Fort Kochi
Fort Kochi is the old colonial quarter at the tip of the peninsula, with quiet streets of old houses and trees. The Chinese fishing nets, huge cantilevered nets on wooden frames, line the beach at its northern edge.
St Francis Church, one of the oldest European churches in India, is where Vasco da Gama was first buried. Santa Cruz Basilica stands nearby. The town hosts the Kochi-Muziris Biennale of contemporary art.
Mattancherry
Mattancherry, to the southeast, has the spice warehouses and the old market. Jew Town is a street of antique shops leading to the Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568, with a floor of blue Chinese tiles.
The Mattancherry Palace, also called the Dutch Palace, has murals of Hindu myths.
Coverage
Fort Kochi and Mattancherry are flat and compact. The walk between them is a few kilometres. Ernakulam, the modern city, is across the water by ferry.
The monsoon, from June to September, brings heavy rain. Winter is the best season.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Kochi clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
