Walk Mysore from the palace
Mysore, officially Mysuru, is the old royal capital of Karnataka, with a grand palace at its centre and a hill temple above it. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the city centre is a pleasant grid to fill.
The palace
Mysore Palace, the seat of the Wodeyar kings, stands at the centre of the city. On Sunday evenings and holidays it is lit by nearly a hundred thousand bulbs. During the Dasara festival in autumn, the city celebrates for ten days.
The streets around the palace have old buildings from the royal period.
The market and the church
Devaraja Market, north of the palace, is a busy old market of flowers, fruit and spices. Sayyaji Rao Road, the main street, runs past it.
St Philomena's Church, with tall Gothic spires, stands north of the centre. The Jaganmohan Palace, an art gallery, is west of the palace.
Chamundi Hill
Chamundi Hill rises southeast of the city, with the Chamundeshwari temple at the top. About a thousand stone steps climb up it, past a big statue of Nandi, the bull.
Mysore has a mild climate. The city is compact and green, and the palace, the market and the hill fill in a good map.
The character who walks with you
FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.
Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Mysore is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
